ZAPORIZHZHIA, UKRAINE - DECEMBER 12, 2019 - A fragment of a Mennonite gravestone is on display in Zaporizhzhia, southeastern Ukraine. In summer 2019, local archaeologists began excavations on the ruins of the ruined Soviet warehouse to find the tombstones that were taken from the destroyed Mennonite cemetery on Khortytsia Island and used in construction in the 1930s some 80 years ago. So far, nearly 300 gravestones have been unearthed. The first German Mennonites settled on the territory of present-day Zaporizhzhia in 1789 and formed a colony which became known as the Chortitza Colony. Ukrinform. /KDR/
